Today started in the hotel. I ran into the Argentinian guy I bought ice cream from last night and we talked about why he was in Germany. It ended up being a complicated story.
The sleeping situation in Hamburg was looking a bit grim due to the holiday but I decided to proceed regardless knowing that I’d figure it out eventually. I added a path that took me out of the main route and through a swamp. It really was a swamp. Neat but there was enough tree fall I had to hike my bike for the vast majority of if it.
The day was pretty easy intentionally. I started with the idea that tomorrow would be a complete rest day, perhaps even visiting a spa.
While taking a lunch I noticed that Minatur Wonderland required tickets in advance to avoid a multihour stand in line wait. The only viable time still available required the VR experience addition and was later in the evening.
A bit tired I biked into Hamburg with the intention of getting a hotel or hostel.
Hamburg surprised me in the amount of brick in the buildings. I checked into a hostel with an extremely long wait and they were able to accommodate my bike. All in a total of €28. After everything was squared away, post shower and change I set out for that small world.
Bliss. A bit packed but just plain fun and you can see the fun that model makers had in the construction. It is littered with small jokes. The pictures explain better than I can.
I’m typing this from the waiting lounge of the VR experience. Don’t know what to expect, aside from probably some nausea. I don’t expect I’ll stay in Hamburg for a rest day as planned. I’d rather go a bit more north and stay in a cheaper, nicer hotel outside of the city.
My plan was to go through Copenhagen but I’m considering going to the tippy top of Denmark and taking a ferry to Kristiansand. I’d like to go to Copenhagen, but I’m finding that, at least for bicycle touring trips, the cities don’t particularly attract me.
