Day 33-34 (Bike Troubles)

June 10, 2022

Darn. I took a rest day in Silkeborg at an Airbnb (actually in Gøvad) after a frustrating day. I’m kinda glad I did

I started the rest day in a campground with the heavens openly pouring buckets of water on to my tent. I woke around 5 AM, sighed, and forced my eyes closed. At around 9 AM my bladder and something resembling motivation forced me to rise

I found my way to the camp reception and paid (around $17, although the site was very level, empty, and protected by a tree). He recommended a bike shop in town and drew me a map.

I’d had a flat from the previous day I needed to repair before heading in to town. Rolling a loaded bike on a flat tire is both a slog and probably not the best thing mechanically. It was raining hard and I didn’t want to fix it. I sat under a tree and listened to the final hour of Leviathan Falls on audiobook which I’d started listening to around the start of my travels. Great for mundane tasks like bike repair or setting up camp when I don’t want my brain to wander.

I patched the tube.

I decided to walk to the bike shop instead of riding. I didn’t want to deal with another flat and it was only two miles. I booked a Airbnb in town for an actual rest day.

The walk was reasonably pleasant but extremely wet. When I arrived I talked to the guy at the bike shop. He advised my tires were worn and thus the flats. I was skeptical as I had maybe 2000 kilometers on them but I just wanted the problem fixed. I found some new tires 44mm with a belt in the middle. Everything was eye-bleeding expensive but I got them. He said they could install them and everything would be ready by 1 PM the next day. I agreed and asked the replace the brake pads at the same time.

I schlepped my two primary panniers and handlebar bag on an hour walk to the Airbnb that took me two hours because of directions. The weather was pleasant the entire way.

I knocked on the door and got the introduction. The place was exactly what I needed. Cheap basement Airbnb

I proceeded to do nothing for about four hours. I eventually walked to a grocery store, made dinner, and boiled some eggs for a future snack. I ate too much black licorice and then read about why I should not Wet, nonsensical picturemake a habit of that (toxic!).

The only English thing on TV was Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, which was an honest joy to watch. I don’t know why but I was quite surprised by the amount of Danish content that actually exists. It’s a small population country.

The next day I cleaned all my gear and made sure it was dried out. I started another audiobook Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi which was a fun romp for the portion listened. I cleaned up, left, and headed to the bike shop around 11 AM.

I arrived around noon and it was ready. The bill gave me a bit of a heart attack. Probably doing all my own repairs for the rest of this trip. I loaded up at the grocery store and headed out for Arden where I booked a room for $35. I noticed some small things, like they hadn’t puts caps on the new tubes or adjusted the brake pull to the right depth which irritated me but were quick to fix. I still have my old tires. I’ll probably mail them back home as they will make good fire road tires.

I was making great time. The new tires were extra comfy and faster by a good margin. Lakes everywhere Grass Selfie with passing tractor

Lots of fields. I passed of number of immaculately kept cemeteries that I’d not seen the like of yet.

I got a flat on my front tire. It was a puncture that left a very small hole. I didn’t really have words. I got it patched but couldn’t get the tire perfectly seated. I had twenty miles to go so just planned to fix it in the morning.

I reflected on attention today.

I biked about 60 miles.

When I checked into my Airbnb I was warmly greeted and fed unexpected pizza (8 slices!) and a beer. I was mother-henned a bit and it was nice.

Pizza!

The plan for tomorrow is to head to the coast for Skagen which every person I meet recommends unprompted. I think after that I’ll take a ferry from Hirsthals to Bergen to start going up the coast of Norway.
